Police officers dressed as superheroes surprise children’s hospital with heartwarming stunt

A children's hospital in Ohio got the ultimate Halloween surprise Wednesday after a band of spirited police officers arrived for a visit.

SWAT team members from the Toldeo Police Department turned up to a local hospital in full costume — donning superhero outfits from across the comic book universe.

In what is apparently a yearly tradition, Batman, Iron Man, Wolverine and more stopped by the ProMedica Toledo Children's Hospital to help cheer up some of the younger patients, all while dangling from a sky-high rope.

"Today members of the Toledo Police SWAT Unit took to the skies to help make a rainy day sunny for the children at the Toledo Children’s Hospital. For the sixth year in a row, members of the SWAT Team rappelled from the roof of the hospital to surprise the children," the department tweeted Wednesday.

The police department and hospital both posted videos of the event, which involved numerous SWAT officers swinging down to the hospital's windows as excited children watched from inside. Afterward, the superheroes came inside to meet with some of the patients.

"It's nice to just see [these kids] have a day where they can just be themselves and just be kids again and not have to worry about being in the hospital and just enjoy themselves," said SWAT officer Matt Slayman, who went as Wolverine, told WNWO-TV.

The children also got a chance to celebrate their own version of Halloween, despite some of them not being able to leave the hospital for the actual holiday. A video posted by local newspaper The Blade shows the young patients trick-or-treating and diving into candy as parents and officers watch.

"It just makes it a lot easier on us knowing that he's actually getting to do something other than just play in [the hospital] room all day — it makes it a little more worth it," parent Brandi Aldrich told The Blade.
