Andy Reid on Patrick Mahomes' injury: 'I don’t think you can put a timeline on this thing'
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs seemingly dodged a major bullet involving quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ recently dislocated knee. Now the question is how soon he can return to the starting lineup.
A source told Yahoo Sports that Mahomes’ second opinion on the dislocated “went well,” though a definitive timeline for a return is unknown. The source added that much will hinge on how Mahomes’ rehab goes and what his follow-up MRIs look like.
On Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that information, just minutes after head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said Monday that Mahomes’ original MRI on Friday also turned out as good as they hoped.
“I don’t think you can put a timeline on this thing,” Reid told reporters. “I think you just go off how he feels, and what the doctors say. I know people want a time. I don’t think you can do that with this injury.’”
The injury generally requires a three- to six-week timeline for return. Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford returned from the same injury in four weeks in 2009.
Stafford’s toughness is unquestioned within Detroit’s organization and Mahomes is regarded in a similar manner in Kansas City.
“When you’ve been around him enough, you know that nothing is impossible with this kid — he goes 100 miles an hour, and it’s important that he listens to the doctors and the trainers and that he works hard at the same time and gets himself ready to go,” Reid said. “He’s doing everything he can possibly do.”
Mahomes spent the weekend doing extensive rehabilitation and pool therapy at the facility, pushing for a return to the field as soon as possible, although Reid downplayed the possibility at least for Sunday night’s game at home against the 6-1 Green Bay Packers.
“I’d probably say it would be a stretch for him to get there,” Reid said. “But he’s working hard and from the information we’ve had just to this point, he’s doing what he can do. But we’re going to get Matt [Moore] ready to go on the other hand.”
Moore is a 12-year veteran who came on in relief of Mahomes in the Chiefs’ 30-6 win over Denver on Thursday night. He completed 10 of 19 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown.
“He’ll get himself ready to go, which he does every week,” Reid said. “He’s relentless with that, even when Patrick is healthy.”
