Drew Brees gives best attempt at a thumbs up after hand surgery

Updated

Drew Brees is staying positive after suffering a thumb injury that will sideline him for a significant chunk of the NFL season.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback took to Instagram on Thursday to give his best attempt at a thumbs up after undergoing what he called a "successful" surgery on a torn ligament in his throwing hand.

The 40-year-old suffered the injury in Week 2 when the Saints took on the Los Angeles Rams in a rematch of last season's NFC Championship game.

While New Orleans hasn't released an official timetable for Brees's return, head coach Sean Payton said the team would not be putting the veteran quarterback on injured reserve, which would require him to miss eight weeks.

Backup quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater, who took over in Week 2, and Taysom Hill are expected to split time during Brees's absence.
