30-Hour Coffin Challenge: Six Flags offering a prize for couples willing to be 'laid to rest' together

Updated

"Until death do us part" has never seemed so real.

Six Flags America is putting a few relationships to the test this Halloween, offering couples the chance to be "laid to rest" together. The challenge, which takes place on Sept. 27 and 28, is asking six pairs to spend 30 straight hours together at the park — all while lying inside a coffin.

The prize? $600 in cash, a pair of gold season passes for 2020 and a prize package for Fright Fest, the park's Halloween-themed seasonal event.

It's called the Fright Fest 30-Hour Couples Coffin Challenge, and it's not as easy as it might sound. In addition to spending more than a day trapped in a confined space together, the couples are also forbidden from accessing technology — including phones, headphones and watches — during the challenge.

That's on top of the park torturing contestants with "fog, dramatic lighting, flash photography and extreme weather conditions" — which are meant to help weed out the competition.

There will, of course, be designated bathroom and food breaks, during which time the pairs can check their devices, according to the event's promotional page. Anyone who leaves the coffin outside of those specific breaks, though, will be disqualified.

Couples who can survive until the end will get the prize, but there are a few catches. First of all, the challenge is only taking place at the Six Flags park in Upper Marlboro, Md., and any couple who wants to participate has to pay for their own travel there.

Also, participants are not allowed to compete alone, although the park is willing to interpret the term "couple" somewhat loosely. The event page specifies that pairs can be friends, siblings or cousins, in addition to romantic couples.

Those interested in competing need to hurry, though. Registration for the event closes at midnight on Friday, Sept. 20.
