Two-time cancer survivor wins $4.6 million lottery jackpot

An Oregon man who beat cancer twice has just been given another reason to count his blessings.

Stu MacDonald, of Bend, Ore., who enters the state's Game Megabucks drawing on a regular basis, says his wife, Claudia, typically reminds him to "get the winning ticket" before his weekly purchase.

And even though she forgot the words of advice on Sept. 7., MacDonald's luck still managed to pull through once again.

The two-time cancer survivor nabbed the $4.6 million jackpot on a quick-pick ticket he purchased at a local café last week, according to a press release.

"I am a very lucky guy," MacDonald said. "I have survived cancer twice and here I am. This is amazing."

The big winner opted to take the bulk sum payment of $2.3 million, which left him $1.56 million after taxes. Ashley’s Café, the restaurant where MacDonald purchased the lucky ticket, will also receive a 1 percent selling bonus, totaling $46,000.

"We are thrilled to learn that we sold a Megabucks jackpot," said Tezra Kong, director of operations for Ashley's. "We are excited for the team who sold the ticket. A big congratulations to our guests on their windfall."

Since the Oregon Lottery's founding in 1985, its players have won more than $38 billion in prizes, according to its website. The organization urges those who score its bigger prizes to consult "a trusted financial planner or similar professional to develop a plan for their winnings."
