Vegan woman in Western Australia takes neighbors to court because she can smell their barbecue

A vegan woman is taking her neighbors to court over the smell of their backyard barbecue, according to Australia's 9News.

Cilla Carden, who lives in the Australian city of Perth, has filed a complaint with her region's highest court over the issue. Carden's claim states that her neighbors cook fish so often that she's unable to even go outside.

"They've put it there so I smell fish, all I can smell is fish. I can't enjoy my backyard, I can't go out there," Carden told 9News.

The formal complaint, which has already been denied by both the State Administrative Tribunal of Western Australia and the state's Supreme Court, insists that the neighbors' behavior is intentional.

"It's deliberate," Carden told 9News. "That's what I told the courts. It's deliberate."

Carden's claim includes other issues, including that her neighbors' cigarette smoke often drifts into her yard and that she can hear children loudly bouncing basketballs.

"It's been devastating, it's been turmoil, it's been unrest, I haven't been able to sleep," she told 9News.

Despite numerous rejections by the courts, Carden said she will continue bringing her case forward. But she may have a new challenge on her hands in the meantime.

After Carden's story went viral, numerous Facebook visitors joined a page titled Community BBQ for Cilla Carden. The page promotes an event scheduled for Oct. 19, calling for meat-eating attendees to show up to Carden's neighborhood and start grilling.

"Don’t let Cilla destroy a good old Aussie tradition, join us for a community BBQ in protest of her actions, and help Cilla Carden GET SOME PORK ON HER FORK," the event description says.

It's unclear whether the page is entirely a joke or if some are taking it seriously. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 4,500 people indicated they planned to attend the event.
