Ezekiel Elliott is flying back to Dallas in case his extension with Cowboys gets done

Updated

With the NFL regular season just days away, Ezekiel Elliott is going back to Texas. Elliott — who is still holding out — is flying back to Dallas in case his extension with the Cowboys gets done, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Elliott and the Cowboys haven’t come to a deal yet, though the team has been active with extensions. The Cowboys signed linebacker Jaylon Smith and agreed to a deal with offensive lineman La’el Collins.

The messaging regarding Elliott’s extension has been muddled in recent days. Some reports suggested the two sides were getting closer to a deal, but those talks fell through.

Throughout the process, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has sent mixed messages. One day, Jones will say he will get a deal done with Elliott’s agent. The next, Jones will question whether the Cowboys truly need a superstar running back.

In his three seasons in the NFL, the 24-year-old Elliott has emerged as one of the best running backs in the game. He’s led the NFL in rushing twice, and has scored 28 rushing touchdowns during that period.

While it’s unclear whether the two sides will agree to a deal, Elliott coming back to Dallas isn’t a bad thing. If a deal gets done, he could be available for Week 1. If not, at least Elliott will be ready to go the instant the Cowboys need him.
