Was Carli Lloyd's field goal celebration during USWNT game an NFL hint?

Carli Lloyd hitting a 55-yard field goal as a guest at Philadelphia Eagles practice has turned into full-fledged campaign for the soccer star to get a shot in the NFL.

She delivered another signal Thursday in a USWNT game that she’s seriously considering the idea.

How did we get here?

On Monday, Lloyd’s trainer James Galanis said that an NFL team had reached out to her about a preseason roster spot that he said she turned down.

On Tuesday Lloyd appeared to be taking the offer to heart, telling NBC Sports after throwing out the first pitch at the Philadelphia Phillies-Pittsburgh Pirates game “I’m now entertaining the idea.”

“I think I definitely could do it with the right practice and the right technique,” Lloyd said.

Galanis told ESPN that day that if she decides to pursue the idea, she’ll train for it with her sights set on 2020. Sorry, Bears fans.

Lloyd’s latest NFL signal

On Thursday, Lloyd delivered the latest signal pointing to a potential career change.

During a USWNT friendly against Portugal, Lloyd scored a goal to give the U.S. a 3-0 lead. She initially celebrated by flapping her arms like a bird, an ode to her beloved Eagles, whose season starts next week.

After trading hugs with her teammates, Lloyd raised both arms above her shoulders, giving the ubiquitous signal for a made field goal.

While Lloyd actually deciding to train for an NFL job, going through the process and then making an NFL roster all adds up to a tremendous long shot, the fact that the idea is being taken seriously to begin with is a testament to her abilities and a shift in football culture.

Despite all of the obstacles, there’s no reason she shouldn’t give it a go if that’s what she wants to do.
