5-year-old girl killed after stone fence falls on her in freak accident

A 5-year-old girl in New York died after a stone fence collapsed on her in a freak accident on Thursday, according to WNBC.

Authorities said Alysson Pinto-Chaumana was walking by the fence — which consisted of marble pillars and a shelf on top — with her mother in Brooklyn when she pulled on it. After the child repeatedly tugged on the fence, parts of it came apart and fell on her, police said. She reportedly suffered head trauma as a result.

A neighbor told the station that he heard the impact and rushed outside to help the mother. The two flagged down an ambulance that happened to pass by, and Alysson was rushed to a hospital. The child was later pronounced dead.

Though records show that there were no outstanding facade violations where the incident occurred, an investigation is ongoing.

Alysson's death comes just two days after 2-year-old Alexa Martinez, of Harvey, Ill., died when an 8-feet-high shoe store display fell on her. Police said Alexa and several other children had been playing inside the store when one of them made contact with the display.
