Mom claims 9-month-old became sick after baby formula purchased at Walmart was replaced with flour

Authorities are investigating after a Phoenix mother claimed her 9-month-old daughter became sick when she fed the infant the contents of a baby formula container she purchased at a local Walmart.

Madeline Roque told KPNX that her daughter, Adeline, began throwing up, passing gas and having diarrhea after drinking from a bottle the baby initially tried to refuse.

After making three additional bottles, Roque said, she "knew something was wrong," as the substance appeared whiter and had a lighter feel than Adeline's typical formula. When the concerned mom dumped out one of the bottles, her fears were confirmed.

"When I poured the bottle in the sink ... that's when it just hit me," she recalled. "I saw how it clumped up, and in my head, I'm like, my daughter's stomach is just the same, or even worse."

The infant received prompt medical treatment and has since recovered from consuming what her mother believes was flour that someone swapped into the baby formula container and returned to the store for cash.

The Arizona Attorney General's office is now looking into the incident, KPNX reports.

In May 2017, 30-year-old Jennifer Laplante was arrested after police in Tucson discovered she had been purchasing baby formula, replacing the contents and returning the formula to stores such as Walmart and Fry's Store for a refund.

At least one baby became sick with non-life-threatening injuries from the tampered-with formula, according to a police statement.

In the wake of the incident, the Tucson Police Department advised parents who recently purchased infant formula to "examine the product carefully."

"If there is anything unusual about the seal — or lack of a seal; if the product looks or has an odd smell in any way — DO NOT USE the product and notify our department," it wrote on Facebook.
