'I don't know how it wasn't me': Son of man killed in Dayton, Ohio, shooting says his father died in his arms

Dion Green was at Ned Peppers Bar with his father, Derrick Fudge, when a gunman opened fire near the Dayton, Ohio, establishment, killing nine people and injuring dozens more.

Green made it out of the bar alive, but his 57-year-old father did not.

"I can't sleep because every time I close my eyes, I see his eyes," Green told Cincinnati's WLWT. "I don't know how it wasn't me."

Fudge was one of the nine victims killed in the mass shooting early Sunday morning, and Green told reporters his father likely saved his life.

“He must have taken it for me,” Green told the Springfield News-Sun. “I just don’t understand. I’m so lost in the situation myself. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.”

Green said the evening started out as a fun night on the town with his girlfriend and his father. The group was ready to call it a night and were standing outside the bar when Green saw the gunman walking toward them.

"He walks by me, I still don't move, I'm not in shock because I'm like, ain't nobody down here in the Oregon District with a mask and this type of weapon about to do this," Green told WLWT.

The shooter began firing his .223-caliber assault rifle just seconds later. Soon, Green was holding his father in his arms, saying his goodbyes.

"Then as I get closer I start to see blood in the back of his head. I just lost it, it's just like, 'Dad I love you.' I'm holding him tight, I just wrapped around his body and just lied on him," Green told WLWT.

Green told the news station how much pain and regret he feels because of that night.

"I'm going through pains people don't go through in two lifetimes. I replay that night, and I'm just like, man, I could've just stopped him," Green said.

Fudge was the oldest person killed in the shooting. The other victims were Lois Oglesby, 27; Saeed Saleh, 38; Logan Turner, 30; Nicholas Cumer, 25, Thomas McNichols, 25, Beatrice Warren-Curtis, 36 and Monica Brickhouse, 39; and Megan Betts, 22, who was the gunman's sister.

Authorities haven't established a clear motive for the attack, but the FBI has said that the gunman had an obsession with violence and mass shootings
