McNeil's first All-Star Game spoiled by scoreboard error

Imagine walking to the plate in your first All-Star Game appearance, feeling like you’re on top of the world. Then you glance at the scoreboard, where your name appears in bright lights alongside the photo of someone who clearly isn’t you.

That was the unfortunate experience of New York Mets outfielder Jeff McNeil during Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Home viewers didn’t see the error on the Fox Sports broadcast. However, those in attendance were quick to recognize that McNeil’s photo was replaced by that of Mets teammate Jacob deGrom.

It’s an inexplicable error that should have been double-checked and corrected before hitting the scoreboard. But there it is.

Understandably, McNeil was not happy about it.

Is it the worst thing in the world?

No. Far from it. But it might be easier to overlook this mistake if it were the only error to appear on the scoreboard during All-Star weekend.

It turns out there were several other mistakes just in the All-Star Game alone.

Colorado Rockies outfielder David Dahl and Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras both had their first names misspelled.

While the Arizona Diamondbacks Ketel Marte and the Los Angeles Dodgers Cody Bellinger were identified as members of the Atlanta Braves.

During Sunday’s Futures Game, which was also played at Progressive Field, the names of Cincinnati Reds prospect Taylor Trammell and Boston Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran were also misspelled.

Mistakes happen. It’s not the end of the world. But it’s a moment these players have dreamed of, and in some cases may never experience again. It’s not a lot to ask or expect to be properly identified.
