Utah college student goes missing after ordering Lyft from airport

A University of Utah student went missing after she returned from a trip and ordered a Lyft last Monday, KSTU reports.

Mackenzie Lueck, 23, flew to California two weeks ago to attend a funeral for her grandmother, according to her father, who filed a missing persons report last Thursday.

The student texted her parents around 1 a.m. last Monday to let them know she had returned to Salt Lake City, which was the last time they heard from her.

Records show that Lueck reportedly ordered a Lyft to her destination upon returning to Utah. The ride-share company, which is cooperating with authorities in the search for the missing woman, said her route "contained no irregularities and ended at the destination entered by the rider." The driver continued to give rides after Lueck's ride ended, Lyft added.

"We recognize how scary this must be for those who know and love Ms. Lueck," the company said in a statement. "The safety of our community is fundamental to Lyft and we are actively assisting law enforcement with their investigation."

Since Lueck's disappearance, her friends and sorority sisters have posted missing person fliers on light posts while asking residents if they saw anything suspicious, KSTU notes.

"Not going home to your pets or your roommates, or just dropping your luggage off, that’s very abnormal," Ashley Fine, a friend of Lueck's, told the station on Sunday. "Not going to work. Having your phone off for five days now, very very bizarre and alarming."

At a news conference on Sunday, others made similar comments about Lueck's character and stressed that she is not the type to skip out on her responsibilities, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

"For her to not reach out to me is very unlike her. She is usually in touch with me every day," said Kennedy Stoner, who considers Lueck one of her best friends. "We don’t believe she would miss a midterm because she was stressed. I am positive something is wrong. ... I don’t believe she would go off and not contact one person."

Lueck is approximately 5’6” tall and weighs 120 pounds. She has blonde hair and brown eyes. Anybody with any information regarding her disappearance should contact the Salt Lake City Police at (801) 799-3000.
