Motorcyclist killed in Fla. after lightning strikes helmet

A lightning strike killed a motorcyclist riding in Florida.

Orlando’s Fox 35 reports that lightning struck the helmet of a rider traveling south on interstate 95 in Volusia County.

The Florida Highway Patrol tweeted a photo of the rider’s cracked and burned helmet.

The Fox affiliate reports that an off-duty Virginia police officer witnessed the strike.

Florida police say that after the rider was hit by the lightning bolt, he veered off the highway and overturned several times, throwing the rider from the motorcycle.

Fox 35 reports that the deceased rider was a 45-year-old man from Charlotte, North Carolina, but his name has not yet been released.
