Athletes across sports reach out after news of David Ortiz being shot and hospitalized

Updated

The sports world was thrown into shock on Sunday night when news came out about Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz being shot and hospitalized in his native Dominican Republic.

Players were initially shocked and distraught when reports started emerging, although that shifted more to relief as news emerged that Ortiz is in stable condition.

Ortiz, who retired after the 2016 season, remains one of the most popular players in baseball. He won three World Series with the Red Sox, including earning the 2004 ALCS MVP honors en route to the team’s first championship in 86 years.

Ortiz has touched the lives of many athletes, even those outside baseball. With his impact in the Dominican Republic and Boston, plenty of athletes grew up idolizing the future Hall of Famer.
