NBA Finals: Light falls from Oracle Arena ceiling, nearly hits Sportsnet broadcasters during Game 3

An errant light fixture nearly took out a Canadian broadcast team during Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night in Oakland, California, after it came crashing down just after halftime.

Just after the start of the third quarter, a light hanging from the ceiling at Oracle Arena came crashing down to the floor and landed just between Sportsnet broadcaster Leo Rautins and his stage manager, who were sitting courtside while he and Matt Devlin were calling the game on Sportsnet.

While there isn’t footage of the light actually falling, you can see an Oracle Arena staff member holding the large fallen fixture attached to a wire just behind Rautins and his stage manager on the Sportsnet broadcast.

“I’m trying to stay alive right here Matty. I’m not kidding you folks,” Rautins said on the broadcast, showing how close the light came to hitting them. “I’m sitting here courtside, there is this light from the ceiling that came down and landed right here. If I leaned over this way, it’d be over, done.”

Thankfully, both Rautins and his stage manager were leaning the right way when the light fell and avoided serious injury.

The Toronto Raptors cruised past the Golden State Warriors 123-109 in Game 3 despite a 47-point night from Stephen Curry. They now hold a 2-1 series lead heading into Game 4 on Friday night.
