World No. 2 Karolina Pliskova upset at French Open
World No. 2 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic lost in a surprising straight-set upset to Croatia’s Petra Martic, 6-3, 6-3.
It was an unexpected result not just because of Pliskova’s lofty worldwide standing, but by the fact that she was coming off a victory at the Italian Open earlier in May.
Pliskova is the fourth world top-10 player to leave the French Open in the early rounds this year. No. 1 Naomi Osaka narrowly avoided defeat on Thursday morning; Pliskova’s loss means Osaka will definitively hold onto the top ranking coming out of Roland Garros.
Pliskova has not yet won a Grand Slam title, coming as close as the finals of the U.S. Open in 2016. Martic broke Pliskova twice in the first set and three times in the second. Pliskova made 28 unforced errors on the day and won only 33 percent of points on her second serve, numbers that didn’t bode well for her prospects.
