Ocasio-Cortez slams Politico's 'antisemitic' Sanders imagery

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has lashed out at Politico, accusing the news outlet of using anti-Semitic illustrations in a profile on Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders who is Jewish, reports The Hill.

“Can ⁦@politico⁩ explain to us how photoshopping money trees next to the only Jewish candidate for president and talking about how ‘cheap’ and rich he is isn’t antisemitic?” she tweetedSaturday. “Or are they just letting this happen because he’s a progressive politician they don’t like?”

She included Politico’s (since deleted) tweet about the Sanders article which shows an image of him with a house on each shoulder and one in front along with the text, “Bernie Sanders might still be cheap, but he’s sure not poor.”

Meanwhile, the Politico article itself, which is about Sanders’ growing wealth amid his democratic socialist ideals, features an image of the Vermont Senator standing next to a money tree in front of a nice house.

David Sirota, a senior campaign adviser for the Vermont lawmaker, blasted Politico over the controversy, saying: “It’s important for everyone to not forget this episode. At a moment when we have a president who called Nazis ‘very fine people,’ this newspaper promoted the ‘cheap Jew’ trope against that president’s opponent. Disgusting.”
