Baby boy cut from slain mother’s womb opened his eyes for the first time during a visit from his dad

The baby boy who was cut from his mother’s womb and has been fighting for his life since her slaying has made progress, a family spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Baby Yadiel, who remains in critical condition and relies on a breathing machine, first opened his eyes over the weekend during a visit from his father, Giovanni Lopez, and his 3-year-old brother, Julia Contreras told ABC News.

He opened them again Monday as Lopez was cradling him.

“He seems to be a fighter,” she told the outlet.

Contreras did not immediately respond to the Daily News for comment.

Yadiel’s mother, 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, was brutally murdered on April 23 in in the Scottsdale area of Chicago. She was nine months pregnant.

A mother who lost her son in 2017 and her daughter were charged in her killing. Clarisa Figueroa, 46, and her daughter, Desiree, 24, allegedly used a coaxial cable to strangle Ochoa-Lopez.

She had met with the elder Figueroa on April 23 in the hopes of receiving baby clothes and other items. But just hours after Ochoa-Lopez entered the home, Figueroa was seen outside, calling 911 and holding a baby in her arms.

A third person, Piotr Bobak, was charged with concealment of a homicide. Bobak is the boyfriend of the 46-year-old Figueroa.

Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said he assumed the suspects wanted to “raise the child as their own.” He noted that Figueroa’s 20-year-old son died of natural causes in 2017.

Amid the positive news about Yadiel, Ochoa-Lopez’s family still have questions surrounding their daughter’s death and the protocol that was taken at the hospital where Figueroa brought the baby and allegedly claimed to have given birth to him.

“I have asked to see a copy of their protocols and procedures for mothers who come in who have given birth at home,” said Contreras, according to Fox 32 Chicago. “The questions that we asked, which were many, are going to be answered in our next meeting.”
