Man who tortured 2-year-old girl with shock collar and werewolf mask kills himself in jail

A Florida man who was recently charged with torturing his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter died on Tuesday.

Andrew Bennett Ross Celauis, 37, was found hanged in his jail cell on the night of May 1 and was rushed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment, an Escambia County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman told the Associated Press. Doctors made the decision to remove him from life support six days later.

Celaius was initially booked into the jail on April 9 on drug-related charges, but his additional, child-abuse-related charges were announced just hours before he committed suicide.

Celauis's horrific and "systematic" abuse of the 2-year-old first came to light when the victim's mother brought her to a hospital after finding markings on her daughter's skin which she believed might be ringworm, the Pensacola News Journal reports.

Emergency room doctors informed the mom that the marks and skin discoloration could only be the result of burns.

The sheriff’s office opened a child abuse investigation and later discovered hours of footage stored on multiple cameras and cellphones that showed Celauis torturing the girl. On multiple occasions over a two-month span, the suspect allegedly placed an electric dog collar on the girl and shocked her awake at night before standing over her wearing a werewolf mask.

He also filmed himself throwing objects at her as she slept, burning her with a cigarette lighter and shooting her in the head with a BB gun.

Detectives believe the child's mother was unaware of the abuse, as she became extremely emotional upon witnessing what her daughter endured.

"When we played the videos to her, she … she acted appropriately," Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said.
