In the dead of night, Athletics' Mike Fiers completes 300th no-hitter in MLB history

While most baseball fans were sleeping, Mike Fiers was busy making history.

The Oakland Athletics starter threw the second no-hitter of his career late Tuesday night, going the distance against the Cincinnati Reds with five strikeouts and two walks allowed.

Adding to the night’s significance: It was the 300th no-hitter in MLB history.

Quite an unlikely no-hitter from Mike Fiers

Even though he entered the ninth inning at 118 pitches, the A’s still allowed Fiers to finish out the game and record the first no-hitter of the season. He ended up throwing 131 pitches, the most any pitcher has posted this season.

Above all, Fiers benefited from some spectacular defense behind him, including this jaw-dropper from, who else, Ramón Laureano.

Fiers had previously thrown a 134-pitch no-hitter in August 2015 against the Los Angeles Dodgers as a member of the Houston Astros. Funnily enough, the Dodgers’ starting pitcher for that game, Brett Anderson, found himself in the same uniform as Fiers on Tuesday.

Anderson had some fun with the coincidence after the game.

The 33-year-old is now part of a 30-man club to throw multiple no-hitters, and one of five active players to do so along with Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Jake Arrieta and Homer Bailey. Pretty impressive for a player who entered Tuesday with a 4.15 career ERA and a 6.81 ERA this season entering Tuesday.

Why was Fiers pitching so late?

Fiers final pitch was thrown at 2:10 a.m. ET, and 11:10 p.m. local time. Obviously, baseball games don’t usually end that late, especially ones that lasted only nine innings with one team logging zero hits.

The start of the game was delayed by an hour and a half due to a lighting malfunction at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, with first pitch only coming at 8:45 p.m. local time.

“Just glad they got those lights working,” Fiers said on the broadcast after the game.

Suffice to say, quite a few Reds fans are going to be annoyed when they wake up Wednesday morning.
