Trump says Mueller should not testify: 'No redos for the Dems!'
As Democrats set a tentative date for Robert Mueller to testify before Congress, President Trump said the special counsel shouldn't testify, and called for “no redos” of the two-year probe that found no conspiracy between him and Russia.
“After spending more than $35,000,000 over a two year period, interviewing 500 people, using 18 Trump Hating Angry Democrats & 49 FBI Agents - all culminating in a more than 400 page Report showing NO COLLUSION - why would the Democrats in Congress now need Robert Mueller to testify,” Trump tweeted Sunday.
“Are they looking for a redo because they hated seeing the strong NO COLLUSION conclusion? There was no crime, except on the other side (incredibly not covered in the Report), and NO OBSTRUCTION. Bob Mueller should not testify. No redos for the Dems!”
The proposed date for Mueller’s testimony on the report is May 15, two weeks after Attorney General Barr testified before the Senate Judiciary Hearing, during which Democrats grilled his summary of the Mueller report.
His four-page memo detailed 10 episodes that Democrats have argued amount to obstruction of justice by Donald Trump. But in his March 24 summary, Barr stated that Mueller’s investigation found no conspiracy between Trump’s campaign and Russia, and that he, along with then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, concluded that “the evidence developed during the Special Counsel's investigation is not sufficient to establish that the President committed an obstruction-of-justice offense.”
Mueller contested Barr’s summary of the report in a March 27 letter, saying that the memo "did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance of this office’s work and conclusions.” Mueller and Barr discussed the special counsel’s objections.
But at a hearing in early April, when he was asked by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., if Mueller supported his conclusion on obstruction, Barr said he didn’t know.
“I think when Senator Van Hollen and Representative [Charlie] Christ asked you if the special counsel disagreed with you, under oath you had to go out of your way not to at least mention the fact that he had sent you this letter. But you didn’t mention it,” said Amy Klobuchar, one of the committee’s presidential candidates who showed their chops at last week’s hearing. “We must hear from Director Mueller.”
