5 students injured when bounce house flips over at high school in Washington state

Five students were injured, including one critically, when a bounce house flipped over during an outdoor event at a Washington state high school.

One person had to be airlifted from Zillah High School to a nearby hospital after the scary incident on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our hearts go out to the students, parents and staff of those involved,” the school district said in a statement.

It appeared that powerful gusts of wind caused the bounce house to rise, and video captured the moment that it turned over.

“We were having a fun day; everyone was having a good time with students and out of nowhere we see the bouncy house go up pretty high in the air,” sophomore Christopher Molina told KVEW. “It came down, it hit the cement and one girl got a concussion — the other two girls broke their legs.”

The police and fire department treated multiple students, according to the Yakima Herald. One student was given CPR and shock treatment, according to the newspaper.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to officials.

A comprehensive study completed in 2012 found that bouncer-related injuries among children were on the rise.

“This increase, along with similarities to trampoline-related injuries, underscores the need for guidelines for safer bouncer usage and improvements in bouncer design to prevent these injuries among children,” read the conclusion in the report for “Pediatric Inflatable Bouncer–Related Injuries in the United States, 1990–2010.”
