A 41-year-old driver with a concealed carry permit was able to fend off an armed 22-year-old man who attempted to carjack him, killing the suspect in the process, authorities say.

The 41-year-old told police that he was driving his 2015 BMW in Chicago's Loop area around 3:15 a.m. on Friday morning when a 2019 Volkswagen rear-ended him, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Both drivers exited their vehicles to survey the damage, and when the older driver went back to his BMW to retrieve his cellphone, the suspect allegedly approached him with a gun, pushed him against his car and demanded the keys to the luxury vehicle.

The 41-year-old then pulled out his own gun from his car and fatally shot the man in the head. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to Chicago's John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The BMW operator was taken into custody by police for questioning, WMAQ reports. The investigation remains ongoing.
