Report: Lakers GM Rob Pelinka meeting with Tyronn Lue on Friday

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James could be reunited with his old coach soon. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka will meet with former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue on Friday, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The meeting shouldn’t come as a surprise. Since the Lakers parted ways with Luke Walton, Lue has emerged as a possible candidate for the team’s open coaching position.

In parts of four seasons with the Cavaliers, the 41-year-old Lue went 128-83. He guided the team through the postseason in 2015-16 and helped bring an NBA championship to Cleveland. The Cavaliers made the NBA finals the following two seasons. Lue was fired just six games into his fourth season with the team after the departure of James to the Lakers.

While Lue’s relationship with James is strong, it’s unclear whether that’s a selling point for the Lakers. There are some in the organization who believe hiring Lue would give James too much power, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams and Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard are also being considered for the position.

Whoever gets hired should have an easier time than Walton. The Lakers are expected to pursue another star to pair with James this offseason.

If the team is successful, all the new coach has to do is sit back and watch as a significantly improved roster does its thing.
