2 coaches reportedly being told to stay away from the Lakers

A couple of major college basketball head coaching searches have gone somewhat embarrassingly, with UCLA and St. John’s both getting publicly turned down by multiple candidates.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching search is apparently trending toward a similar result.

According to two reporters, two different Lakers targets are being advised to stay away from the franchise, which fired Luke Walton earlier this month.

The first head coach is Sixers assistant Monty Williams, who might be the favorite for the position.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported on the Mason & Ireland show on ESPN 710 that “everyone” in the league has told him to not take the job.

“I think Monty’s the favorite, but I don’t know how that interview went last night. I haven’t heard from either side and it also is a choice for him. He’s probably in line if Philly opens up. If they lose or if they fall short, he’d be in line to step in there. His kids are settled there, he’s done a lot of moving around, so I could see him stay there. And also, everyone in the league has told him not to take the job.”

Another target, former Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, has been told similar things.

ESPN’s Jorge Sedano had those details:

“So I told you earlier, and I mentioned this yesterday, that someone I know that is a mutual friend with Ty Lue, that is a very close friend to Ty Lue, told me, ‘I told Ty, don’t take the Lakers job. This thing is a mess.’”

The Lakers are an iconic franchise, with a roster that boasts LeBron James, but it looks like they could have some difficulty luring a top candidate to Southern California.
