Nancy Pelosi writes off Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional support as ‘like five people’

Nancy Pelosi saved most of her shade for her own party.

The House Speaker fired a warning shot at left-wing politicians within the House Democrats, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in particular, during a sit-down with “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl that aired Sunday night.

Halfway through the interview, Stahl asked specifically about the various factions within the party, which she labeled as “self-described socialists” and “moderates.”

“And you yourself said that you’re the only one who can unify everybody. And the question is can you?” she asked.

Pelosi said her job was less to unite the two as to stay in the middle.

“By and large, whatever orientation they came to Congress with, they know that we have to hold the center,” she said. “That we have to be...go down the mainstream.”

The Speaker insisted that Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow progressives know they’re expected to stay in line, but Stahl said that the party at least appears to be “fractured.”

“You have these wings — AOC, and her group on one side —” Stahl said.

“That’s like five people,” Pelosi responded, brushing off one of the most recognizable Democrats, let alone a freshman Congresswoman.

She did, however, say she still views herself as a progressive.

Pelosi has repeatedly tried to downplay Ocasio-Cortez’s base and influence; just last week, she took a swipe at the New York Democrat without even naming her.

“While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have large numbers of votes on the floor of the House,” she told USA Today.

Ocasio-Cortez has 3.93 million Twitter followers, compared to Pelosi’s 2.44 million.
