Tom Brady joins Twitter to say he's retiring (yes, it's April Fools' Day)

Imagine if Tom Brady really did decide to suddenly retire on April 1. Nobody would believe him until April 2.

It’s April Fools’ Day and NFL teams got jokes. The Chicago Bears even went so far as to change their roster numbers on their website to fool people into believing they’re adding a “1” to everyone’s jersey numbers to celebrate their 100th season.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady even went so far as finally joining Twitter, all to say he’s retiring. Everyone knew what day it was and didn’t believe him.

Tom Brady joins Twitter for an April Fools’ joke

Brady did have some commitment to the joke. He got verified on Twitter before he posted. He has resisted joining Twitter, so him showing up at all with a blue checkmark was a surprise.

But nobody was believing his retirement announcement would be this brief.

The Patriots official Twitter played along with the gag:

Hey, if Brady wanted to retire and do it with nobody reacting for 24 hours, that was the way to do it.

Brady has been on social media for years

As expected, Brady had about 30,000 followers in less than a half hour, and that will probably grow rapidly. He had followed nobody on Twitter as of Monday morning.

Brady is entertaining on social media. He has a great Facebook page, and sometimes makes news on Instagram. We’ll see if he’s as active on Twitter. But he’s on it now, even though he started things with a half-hearted April Fools’ joke.
