ESPN names double-digit seed with best chance of making Sweet 16

As we learned from Loyola-Chicago and UMBC last year, the double-digit seeds in the NCAA Tournament are not to be underestimated. Making the Sweet 16 is not easy for even the top programs in the country. This year, one double-digit seed appears to be standing out from the crowd.

According to ESPN’s College Basketball Power Index (BPI), the 12-seeded Oregon Ducks of the South Region have been given the best odds of any double-digit seed to make the Sweet 16. The Ducks have been given a 15.7-percent chance of advancing, a full five points higher than any other double-digit seed.

The Ducks are currently slated to face Wisconsin in the First Round. With a win, they would face the winner of Kansas State and UC Irvine in the Second Round.

The Ducks went just 19-12 in the regular season, earning the sixth seed in the Pac-12 tournament. But several games of terrific defense combined with an overtime win over Arizona State resulted in a Pac-12 title and a sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the past 10 years.

Considering their strong current form, Oregon could very well be favored against the Wisconsin Badgers.

As for a potential matchup with presumptive Second Round opponent Kansas State, the Wildcats provide a very stiff challenge that will take every bit of head coach Dana Altman’s savvy to eke out the win.

But it is not impossible.
