Dave Gettleman on Odell Beckham deal: 'We do have a plan, and this is a part of it'

A day after the trade that shook the NFL, the New York Giants have addressed dealing Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

Well, kind of. And they weren’t completely upfront about it.

The Giants acknowledged the trade via Twitter on Wednesday. In doing so, they omitted the most critical and criticized aspect of said deal — trading away a transcendent NFL talent in his prime.

What exactly did New York give up?

Here’s how the Giants officially announced the Beckham deal:

Clicking on the link promising “details” does in fact provide details and moves past the strategy of ignoring what the Giants gave up in return for “Kevin Zeitler, Jabrill Peppers and a pair of draft picks.”

One can only stave off reality for so long.

The link leads to a story on the Giants official site about the trade and includes the first public words from general manager Dave Gettleman — words that were curated without scrutiny for a Giants public relations platform.

In case you’re wondering, Gettleman is the man who insisted multiple times that the Giants didn’t sign Beckham to a contract extension last fall “to trade him.”

It’s a proclamation Gettleman made as recently as February. It’s one that the Giants felt compelled to elevate on Twitter in January.

Here’s what Gettleman had to say in the official team story.

“The New York Football Giants would like to thank Odell Beckham, Jr. for his contributions,” Gettleman said. “We truly wish him well in Cleveland.”

Gettleman continues to be quoted touting the virtues of adding Zeitler to the offensive line and welcoming New Jersey native Peppers back home.

He’s also quoted touting the team’s “draft pick capital.”

“With the first-round draft choice, that gives us six and 17,” Gettleman said. “As we continue to build this team, you need draft pick capital. This trade enabled us to do that.”

Gettleman says he has a plan

The story finally closes with the first interesting quote from Gettleman about the Beckham deal, a portion of the story where Gettleman promises skeptical fans that the team actually has a plan.

“You can win while you build a roster,” Gettleman said. “We do have a plan, and this is a part of it.”

The thing about addressing the Beckham trade via statement is that there’s nobody around to ask followup questions.

So what exactly is that plan? Who knows?

Giants fans, like the rest of us, will just have to stick around to find out.
