Paul Ryan: Trump could lose 2020 election if he makes it about his personality

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan warned that President Trump could lose the 2020 election if he makes it about his personality.

The Treasure Coast Newspapers reports that, during a Monday address given in Vero Beach, Florida, Ryan said: “The person who defines that race is going to win the race. If this is about Donald Trump and his personality, he isn’t going to win it.”

The former speaker reportedly went on to advise that the president focus on policy and offering proposals.

Notably, Trump and Ryan had a somewhat tense relationship toward the end of Ryan’s tenure due to a number of Trump’s signature 2016 campaign proposals failing to get the needed congressional support.

Among them is the wall along the US-Mexico border, a matter Trump continued to lament after Ryan’s departure from the House.

The president told the Daily Caller in January: “Paul told me in the strongest of terms that, ‘Please sign this and if you sign this we will get you that wall.’ Which is desperately needed by our country. Humanitarian crisis, trafficking, drugs, you know, everything — people, criminals, gangs, so, you know, we need the wall.”

“And then he went lame duck,” Trump further noted.
