Woman dies after being struck by falling rock on closed Yosemite trail

Updated

A woman who decided to hike along a closed trail in Yosemite National Park has died.

The National Park Service says the 56-year-old woman was walking on the Mist Trail when she was "struck by falling rock and ice."

She later died from her injuries and the incident remains under investigation.

NPS says that that section of the park is closed this time of year because of "icy and hazardous conditions."

They say the trail closure was clearly marked, adding the woman “...ignored the signs, went around the gate and the incident happened on the trail leading to Vernal Fall."
