Trump announces his new theme: 'Build a wall and crime will fall'

President Trump on Wednesday insisted that, despite the lingering government shutdown, he has “no doubt” about his pursuit to get billions in funding for the wall along the US-Mexico border.

“Great unity in the Republican Party,” Trump tweeted. “Want to, once and for all, put an end to stoppable crime and drugs! Border Security and Wall. No doubt!”

He continued: “BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL! This is the new theme, for two years until the Wall is finished (under construction now), of the Republican Party. Use it and pray!”

In his latest proposal to secure the $5.7 billion for the wall, Trump, over the weekend, offered temporary, limited protections for undocumented immigrants who were illegally brought into the country as children.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned down that proposal, calling it “a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives.”

While Trump has repeatedly attempted to place the blame for the shutdown on Democrats, a new poll suggests that majority of Americans hold him and the GOP responsible.

Vox notes that “according to [the recent] Washington Post-ABC News poll, more than half of Americans (53 percent) say the president and his party should shoulder most of the blame for the closures; another 29 percent point their finger at Democrats in Congress.”
