Tim Tebow gets invited back to Mets spring training camp

If you thought Tim Tebow’s appearance at spring training last year was one big marketing ploy...well, you were right, considering the Mets admitted it. But the former Heisman winner turned toiling minor leaguer is coming back, and the circus surrounding him will likely be right behind.

Tebow received an invite to major league camp and will attract another swarm to Port St. Lucie to see if he can improve upon his .056 batting average last spring.

It’s been a big week for Tebow, who also got engaged to former Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

The outfielder ended up having a surprisingly solid 2018 season with Double-A Binghamton, hitting .273 with six home runs and 36 RBI in 84 games before being shut down after surgery on his hamate bone.

But all the credit goes to Tebow for not hanging it up after that injury, considering he can probably survive without that minor league check. It seems he genuinely wants to chase this dream. Though former Mets GM Sandy Alderson was a big Tebow proponent, the ex-Jets quarterback still has friends in high places in the front office. Brodie Van Wagenen was Tebow’s agent at CAA before becoming the GM.

Van Wagenen has already suggested Tebow might be ready for a call-up if he performs well at Triple-A, where he’s expected to start the 2019 season.

So really, Tebow’s spring invitation should come as no surprise. It’s a no-brainer for the organization, and there’s always that very slim chance we see him in Flushing if the Mets are out of it in September with nothing else to draw fans to the ballpark.
