Explosion takes down Tappan Zee Bridge on Hudson River

After being postponed on Saturday because of high winds, the Tappan Zee Bridge was finally demolished on Tuesday morning.

As onlookers watched, contractors used explosives to destroy eastern support columns. In a puff of smoke, the entire section fell, crashing into the Hudson River.

The bridge, which has spanned the Hudson River in New York for 64 years, was deemed structurally unsound, which is why explosives were utilized instead of taking the bridge down piece by piece.

The mangled steel will be recovered by salvage teams with the help of chains that have been laid in the riverbed.
