Ted Cruz suggests El Chapo should pay for border wall

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz wants drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to pay for a wall at the southern border of the United States. Guzman is currently on trial for allegedly running one of the largest drug-trafficking organizations in the world.

Cruz asked his supporters to become co-sponsors of a bill that would use the $14 billion that the U.S. government seized from El Chapo to pay for the wall.

Amid the partial government shutdown over funding for the wall, Cruz announced the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act via his official Twitter account. He had previously expressed support for a bill that supports $25 billion dollars for the border wall, and appears to be using the El Chapo act to raise funds.

After Cruz’s supporters sign Cruz's online petition, they are led to a fundraising page to “ensure more conservative victories in the future,” Newsweek reports.

This is reportedly not the first time Cruz has used creative means to get campaign funds. According to Newsweek, Cruz sent donation requests to people in Texas in envelopes that were disguised as legal summonses.
