People are calling on U.S. to give a part of Minnesota to Canada

A petition is calling upon the US government to “make America great” by giving a sliver of Minnesota land acquired through a surveying error to Canada.

Called the Northwest Angle, the 123-square-mile area is located between Ontario and Manitoba and getting there from the US requires crossing the very large Lake of the Woods.

According to CBC, it became US property through negotiations for the Treaty of Paris in 1783 and based on an inaccurate map.

The petition notes: “It is the only place in the United States outside Alaska that is north of the 49th parallel, which forms the border between the U.S. and Canada. The total population is only about 120 people which are native to Canadian soil.”

As of Thursday morning, the petition was just over 98,000 signatures short of what it needs to get a White House response.
