Member of U.S. Coast Guard shoots wife, 7-year-old son dead before killing himself: police
A member of the U.S. Coast Guard shot his wife, 7-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter before turning the weapon on himself in a double murder-suicide, according to authorities.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said that Petty Officer First Class John Presnar, 44, got into a domestic dispute with his wife, 39-year-old Gretchen Presnar, at the couple's southern Miami, Fla., home around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday morning.
When Presnar, an electronics technician who worked out of a Coast Guard base in Miami Beach, pulled out a gun, his wife yelled for her mother to run and get help. The disgruntled husband then shot his wife and two kids before shooting himself.
Presnar, his son, and his wife all died from their injuries, while his 8-year-old daughter was airlifted to Miami's Nicklaus Children's Hospital in critical condition, the Miami Herald reports. Gretchen Presnar's mother escaped the shooting uninjured.
Coast Guard spokesman Ryan Kelley released the following statement after the attack:
"The Coast Guard is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family members of those who were killed. We continue to pray for and offer the full support of the Coast Guard to the young child fighting for her life."
