Detroit meteorologist Jessica Starr hanged herself, medical examiner says

Jessica Starr, the Detroit meteorologist who took her own life after chronicling the lasting issues she faced following Lasik SMILE eye surgery, died after hanging herself, a medical examiner ruled.

The cause of death, which was confirmed to the Daily News by the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office in Michigan, was determined following an autopsy Thursday.

Starr — who worked for Fox 2 in Detroit — died Wednesday after opening up on social media about the pain and discomfort she experienced in the aftermath of her eye operation.

A link between Starr’s surgery and her suicide has not been confirmed by authorities.

Starr, who was 35, underwent the Lasik procedure in October and returned to her job on Nov. 13, captioning a Facebook live video at the time that she was “still healing.”

The next day, she shared what ended up being her final tweet.

“Yesterday was a struggle for me,” she wrote. “I really wanted to come back but I need more time to recover. Please keep me in your thoughts during this challenging time.”

Starr’s death was mourned by members of her newsroom.

“All of us here are in shock and cannot believe such a wonderful, bright and intelligent individual will no longer be with us,” read a post from the Fox 2 Twitter page, which also retweeted a number of Starr’s former co-workers who shared similar messages.
