Another injured Redskins QB: Colt McCoy fractures fibula, Mark Sanchez is next up

In the first half of his second start replacing Alex Smith, Colt McCoy was knocked out too. And he’s done for the season.

The Washington Redskins were suddenly down to their third quarterback of the season, familiar face Mark Sanchez, when McCoy had to leave due to a right leg injury. After halftime, ESPN reporter Lisa Salters said McCoy had a fractured right fibula. His season is over.

McCoy was scrambling to his right to avoid the Philadelphia Eagles’ pass rush when he slid down, and his right leg came up and slammed into the knee of Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins. McCoy rubbed his leg but stayed in the game, then eventually limped off at the end of a drive.

Salters said McCoy tried to move on the sideline, including dropbacks, and he told the trainers he couldn’t do it. In came Sanchez. Sanchez is the only other quarterback on the active roster and will presumably take over as the team’s starter.

Sanchez hadn’t played in an NFL game since the end of the 2016 season, which also came in Philadelphia against the Eagles when he was a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The former New York Jets first-round pick was signed by the Redskins when Smith suffered a ghastly broken leg on Nov. 18.

Funny enough, Sanchez fumbled late in the second quarter and recovered it by cradling the ball against his butt … yes, the man famously involved in the “butt fumble” when he was with the Jets recovered a fumble with the help of his butt.

It was no joking matter for Washington. The Redskins have been decimated by injuries this season, but they couldn’t have expected another quarterback injury so early on Monday night. Now they’ll try to stay in the NFC East race with Sanchez, or whoever else they can find in free agency.
