Twelve people were killed in a shooting at a Southern California bar this week by a gunman who later took his own life. The shooting happened during college night at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. The suspect, Ian Long, was a former Marine who had several previous run-ins with police. The victims included patrons, bar employees and Sgt. Ron Helus, who was one of the first emergency responders on scene. Some of the survivors were also survivors of the Las Vegas concert massacre in October 2017.

Other major headlines of the week included Trump announcing that Jeff Sessions is no longer the attorney general, Democrats seizing control of the House during the midterm elections and the U.S. Olympic Committee moving to shutdown USA Gymnastics after the Larry Nassar scandal.
