Did Will Muschamp not know Tuesday was an election day until a reporter brought it up?

College football coaches acting like nothing else exists in the world is tiring.

Our latest example comes from South Carolina’s Will Muschamp, who claimed not to know Tuesday was Election Day at his press conference.

Muschamp was asked by a reporter what he had done regarding voting education with his players. He had no response until he was then asked if he knew what was happening on Tuesday.

“I do now. I’m getting ready for Florida,” Muschamp said in his lame defense.

Muschamp’s response echoes Nick Saban’s reaction in 2016 about that year’s presidential election. Saban clearly knew there was an election in 2018. He appeared in a political ad for West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) along with Jerry West and Bob Huggins that came out in October. Manchin is up for re-election on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s election was the first federal election that many of Muschamp’s players were eligible to vote in. Having conversations about the right to vote is something Muschamp should have had with his team. If he doesn’t want to talk about those conversations, that’s his right. But acting aloof like he did is embarrassing.

Muschamp could learn from Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, whose program made sure every player was registered earlier this year. Or Missouri’s Barry Odom, who opened his press conference with a message encouraging people to vote.

Voting. Everyone just needs to do it. Hopefully Muschamp did.
