Mookie Betts quietly provided hot meals for Boston's homeless after Game 2

Mookie Betts took his big night from the baseball diamond directly to good deeds on the streets.

The Boston Red Sox confirmed to Yahoo Sports that Betts followed up the team’s Game 2 win at Fenway Park by providing a warm meal on a cold night to homeless people in Boston.

The Red Sox hold a World Series lead, 2-0, over the Los Angeles Dodgers going into Friday’s Game 3 in Los Angeles.

Betts feeds homeless with trays of food

Former Red Sox infielder and WEEI radio host Lou Merloni tweeted Thursday night that Betts delivered hot food to the homeless in the early hours of Thursday morning after the Red Sox victory. Temperatures in the northeast have been near or below freezing this week.

Merloni said the photo was taken outside the Boston Public Library at 1 a.m. and included “trays and trays” of food.

Mike Winter, a VIP host for area clubs, saw two men in hoodies “executing a unique show of good faith,” according to a WEEI story Friday morning.

Winter said the two had about 10 trays of food in a shopping cart they were distributing to a line of homeless people near the library. The trays contained steak tips and chicken, which the homeless kindly offered to the drunk people leaving nearby bars.

He recognized Betts and told WEEI the other man was Betts’ cousin, but said they seemed to want to stay on the down-low. Winter told WEEI:

“You see a lot of celebrities do stuff for recognition but the fact was he was trying to stay totally on the down-low. He wasn’t out looking for any recognition all. A lot of people are looking for a pat on the back and he wasn’t looking for that whatsoever. He was incognito just trying to do good.

“Nowadays people do stuff because they want recognition. He didn’t even want recognition. He wasn’t being followed by cameras like people do on Instagram. This is just him being himself.”

Betts is also the man responsible for getting America free tacos as part of Taco Bell’s annual “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” promotion. He stole second base after a lead-off single in Game 1.
