New poll shows majority of Americans think President Trump has been too soft on Saudi Arabia

A new poll finds that most Americans think President Trump has been too soft on Saudi Arabia in response to the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Axios/SurveyMonkey poll found that 56 percent of Americans said his response to Saudi Arabia has been too soft, while 32 percent said his response was "about right." Only 5 percent said he was too tough.

There was a notable partisan divide. The poll found that more than half of Republicans thought the president's response was about right, while 78 percent of Democrats thought he wasn't tough enough.

Trump was initially slow to blame the Saudis, saying that he found its officials’ explanation to be a good first step.

The president also said that the U.S. shouldn’t cancel weapon sales to the kingdom in response to the killing.

But more recently, he called the Saudi explanation the “worst cover-up ever” and that his administration would move to punish "those responsible" for the killing.
