A German mother and her boyfriend were convicted on Tuesday of sexually abusing the woman's 9-year-old son and prostituting the boy to pedophiles on the darknet, according to German outlet Deutsche Welle.

A court in Freiburg, Germany, found the 48-year-old mother, identified only as Berrin T., and her 39-year-old boyfriend, Christian L., guilty of rape, aggravated sexual assault of children, forced prostitution and distribution of child pornography.

Their full names have not been released due to Germany's strict privacy laws regarding ongoing criminal trials.

The pair allegedly raked in thousands of euros until authorities uncovered their operation in September 2017, thanks to an anonymous tip, according to Deutsche Welle.

Berrin T. was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison after she admitted to sexually abusing the boy and pimping him out to men she and her boyfriend found on the darknet for a period of two years. Christian L. was sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by a period of preventive detention due to a prior conviction for child abuse.

Several other suspects, including three German men, one Swiss national and one Spanish citizen, were also arrested for sex crimes they committed against the child. They were all sentenced to between eight and ten years in prison.

The victim is currently living with a foster family and is reportedly "doing well, considering the circumstances," according to his lawyer.
