Report: Ezekiel Elliott sued for more than $1 million after 2017 car collision

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is being sued for more than $1 million in damages after a 2017 car crash in Frisco, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reported on Thursday.

The lawsuit, filed by Ronnie Bernard Hill, claims he suffered “serious, life-altering injuries,” and that he wasn’t able to seek a resolution privately with Elliott.

The initial incident, according to the Dallas Morning News, occurred on Jan. 11, 2017, when Elliott “accidentally ran a red light” and hit Hill’s BMW on the front driver’s side door. Multiple air bags went off in Elliott’s truck, though none were activated in Hill’s BMW. Hill’s lawyer said that his car was totaled and sustained more than $33,000 in damages, and that it was “no fender-bender or rear-end collision.”

He said that Hill is suffering serious injuries, though did not go into detail as to what the injuries are. Hill received medical treatment immediately following the incident, but has been having problems ever since.

Hill’s lawyer also said that the lawsuit was filed “reluctantly.”

“Ezekiel Elliott has not contested fault in causing the crash, and he has nothing, personally to prevent the fair resolution of Ronnie Barnard Hill’s claims,” the lawsuit states, according to the Dallas Morning News. “Nevertheless, although more than a year and a half has passed since the crash, there still is no fair and reasonable resolution of Mr. Hill’s claims.”

The incident occurred just four days ahead of Dallas’ 2017 playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, and Elliott tweeted out after that he was totally fine. Elliott ran for 125 yards on 22 carries in that game.

“I’m good,” he tweeted after the incident. “I’ve been in bigger collisions. Lol.”

Elliott’s lawyer released a statement on Thursday afternoon, saying he expects this to be resolved quickly through insurance coverage.

“This lawsuit — stemming from a 2017 car accident — is between the plaintiff and Mr. Elliott’s insurance company,” Elliott’s lawyer, Frank Salzano, said in a statement. “Mr. Elliott was only named personally because Texas is not a “direct action state” — which means that a claimant cannot file directly against the insurance company but must first name the individual insured (Elliott) in order to trigger the insurance coverage.

“That is exactly what occurred here. We expect Mr. Elliott’s insurance provider to step in accordingly and handle the matter appropriately.”

Hill’s lawyer, Quentin Brogdon, did credit Elliott and say that he has not hindered the investigation or resolution in any way.

“Zeke Elliott, to his credit, admitted at the scene that he ran the red light,” Brogdon told NBCDFW. “Zeke Elliott, as far as we know, has not impeded in any way the agreed resolution or settlement of these legal claims.”

The 23-year-old ran for 983 yards on 242 carries last season and scored seven touchdowns. He was suspended for six games last year for domestic violence allegations that were not held up in court.
