Reuben Foster talks dismissal of domestic violence charges, thanks 49ers for standing by him

Back on May 23, a judge dismissed two felony domestic violence charges against Reuben Foster. On Saturday, for the first time since, the San Francisco 49ers linebacker fielded questions.

Foster said the process was a learning experience, and he said it gave him a deeper appreciation for the game.

“It was crazy knowing that football could be gone,” he said.

As for whether or not he thought his career could indeed be over prior to the judge’s verdict?

“Yeah,” Foster said, “but [the 49ers] stood by me.”

Foster, 24, has had a tumultuous career in the NFL since the 49ers selected him with the 31st pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. In January 2018, he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana. Then, in February 2018, he was arrested on domestic violence and assault weapon possession charges.

In connection to the February arrest, Foster was charged with multiple domestic violence and weapon counts in April. But then, after listening to Elissa Ennis testify and say Foster never hit her and that she made false accusations in order to ruin his career because she was angry over their breakup, California Superior Court Judge Nona Klippen concluded there was not enough evidence to move forward with the trial against Foster.

So, the charges were dropped.

That said, even though he has returned to the field to participate in camp, Foster will sit the first two games.

The NFL suspended him for violating the NFL’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies.
