Controversial former NBA star announces he’s coming out of retirement

Lamar Odom has had a pretty rough few years since he last played professional basketball in 2014. That includes a near-death experience in 2015, when he was found at a Nevada brothel.

Apparently he has recovered well enough from that incident to play competitive basketball once again. This morning, the former NBA star announced that he is coming out of retirement.

The 38-year old New York native is set to play overseas. According to an Instagram post, he will play in China, with Stephon Marbury’s lauded overseas career serving as his inspiration.

According to People, Lamar Odom previously announced that he was moving to China.

He announced that move in an Instagram post, which has since been deleted. It did not mention a return to playing hoops, though.

Odom announced that he was making a big change to his locale by accepting a new management deal with the 90 Plus Group that would relocate him to Shenzhen, China. Although he later deleted his post on the matter, it read in part, “It’s a huge step for me and I feel so happy to be writing new episodes of my life in another country that’s so HUGE in basketball.” Odom had previously been spotted on the merchandising and intellectual property brand’s social media feed weeks before his announcement.

While a return to the NBA is probably not in the cards, the fact that Odom is healthy enough to play at any reasonably high level has to be a good sign, given where he was a few years ago.

He was last on an NBA roster in 2014, when he signed with the New York Knicks in April. He did not appear in a game for the team.

In 2012-13, he played in all 82 games for the Los Angeles Clippers, marking his last NBA action. He was also briefly on the roster of Spanish club Laboral Kutxa Baskonia in 2014.

Earlier this month, Lamar Odom was in tabloid headlines again, when he was reportedly at a Queens Hooters restaurant when a gunfight broke out. He says that he was in no way involved and was not harmed in the incident.
