Minor league pitcher out for season after suffering freak injury
Weird sports injuries are obviously never good for the players who suffer them. They are, however, always interesting to find out about from an outsider’s perspective.
Over the weekend, the New York Mets put starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard on the DL with hand, foot and mouth disease. That’s a pretty rare malady for an adult athlete.
The Detroit Tigers, meanwhile, have declared minor league starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser out for the season with a broken foot. That’s not an uncommon injury, but the way Funkhouser got hurt is.
According to the team, Funkhouser broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot after rolling his ankle on an uneven sidewalk. That ends a pivotal season for the 24-year-old.
RHP Kyle Funkhouser recently sustained a fracture to his 5th metatarsal in his right foot after turning his ankle on an uneven sidewalk while walking home after a game. The injury will require surgery & we expect him to make a full recovery & be ready for Spring Training in 2019.

Funkhouser, Detroit’s fourth round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, made 19 starts this season between AA and AAA. He is 4-7 with a 3.96 ERA.
It stinks to see a player on his way up the ladder derailed, even briefly, by such a freak thing.
Hopefully Funkhouser makes a quick recovery.
