Police officer, bystander shot to death by man who stole cop's gun in Massachusetts

A Massachusetts police officer and a bystander were both killed by a man who struck the cop with a stone before stealing his gun and opening fire.

The Weymouth officer, 42-year-old Michael Chesna, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The suspect, Emanuel Lopes, struck Chesna in the head with a stone before swiping the pistol and shooting him multiple times.

A bullet also fatally struck a woman who was inside her home in Weymouth when Lopes fired the gun as he fled.

Lopes, who suffered a leg wound, was taken into custody and is expected in court on Monday in Weymouth, a city of 55,000 people 16 miles outside Boston.

The officer and bystander were killed after cops spotted Lopes driving erratically on a Weymouth street.

When police tried to pull him over, Lopes crashed into another car and fled on foot.

The suspect then unleashed his deadly attack on officer Chesna.

“You could hear officers running through our neighborhood screaming, telling him to ‘Put the gun down, put the gun down!’” local resident Susan Long told NBC 10 Boston.

Local resident April Visco told the Boston Globe she heard 10 to 20 shots.

“Everyone says ‘it doesn’t happen in my neighborhood,’” she told the Globe. “It does happen everywhere.”

Chesna joined the department in 2012 and was an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Patriot Ledger.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

“He was one of those people who truly sought this job and was fortunate enough to get it,” Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes said.
